Tech Tip Archive / May, Tech Tip 265 - COOKING TIPS

A modern day RV is equipped with everything it takes to prepare all your favorite foods while out on the road.  Take advantage of this updated galley and use your resources wisely.

Equip the galley with cookware that is easy to store and can provide multiple use.  For example, instead of multiple bowls, purchase types that can be used to mix, bake and serve all in one.  Carefully stow glassware to avoid breakage while traveling.

Space is limited so plan ahead when it comes to stocking the galley.  Draft up a menu for the week and list all ingredients to purchase.  Craft a shopping list and make one trip to the store.  Stow dry foods inside plastic boxes to prevent spills from falling over.

Pre-cooked meals are great to have in the freezer for instant meals, but can also take up space.  Keep a few prepared meals on hand to use as a quick dinner on the nights you are setting up camp.  To take up less space, store leftovers in plastic bags instead of bulky containers.

Do not be intimidated by the microwave/convection oven.  This component is simply two ovens in one and instructions are self-guided using the control panel on the oven face.  Setting the clock is necessary before either oven feature will operate.  Avoid metal cookware when using the microwave setting and use only oven safe baking dishes while in the convection mode.  Wipe foods and spills from oven interior when cooled with a soft cloth dampened in water.  Wash the glass tray in mild soap when soiled.

Cover pots to cook faster and save propane.  Wipe the cook top after use to remove grease and food splatter.  Be sure to wipe away crumbs that can collect around the lip molded in the countertop that holds the covers in place.  When the cook top is not in use, replace the covers to maximize counter space.

Refrigerator temperature should remain under forty degrees to protect food.  Keep a thermometer inside a glass jar filled with water to monitor interior box temperature.  To assure efficient cooling do not place hot foods in refrigerator until cool, prevent overloading of the box to restrict airflow and avoid opening the door too often or for too long a period of time.  Remove spills from the refrigerator using a damp cloth.

Dry camping restricts water and electrical power supply.  When the RV is away from shore power turn the refrigerator and water heater to propane mode.  Turn on the water heater an hour before hot water is used and turn the system off when hot water is no longer needed.  Engage the generator while running the oven and conserve water supplies.

Decreased air pressure at high altitude lowers the boiling point of water.  This will require adjustments to cooking time, and in many cases, temperatures and food ingredients will also need modified.  Consult recipes and food packaging for high altitude cooking alterations.

Frequently wash hands in warm soap and water while preparing foods.  When water supplies are limited, keep a container of anti-bacterial hand wipes nearby.

To spend less time in the galley and more time outdoors, slowly cook meals in a crock-pot throughout the day.  Meal preparation can be further streamlined by pre-mixing breading, meat rubs and dry ingredient portions of baked goods and storing them in plastic bags ahead of time.

Regularly clean the galley.  Wipe down appliances and countertops and dispose of trash on a daily basis.  At least one time each week wipe wood cabinets and hardware, wash the roof vent screen and clean the floor.
